Folk Stitches- Blocks 1, 2, 3 and Pressing Instructions

Welcome to the very exciting first sewing day of sewing for the Folk Stitches Quilt Along! I have been waiting and waiting for this day. If you're not sure what this is all about, visit the Introduction post here.

First off- how to construct and press your blocks. Each and every block in the quilt will be done the same way.

The pieces will be sewn into 8 rows of 8. Then, rows are pressed alternately. Top row to the right, second row to the left, etc. The bottom row should be to the left. The seams will nest, ensuring lined up squares.

Once the rows are sewn together, press the rows either all up or all down, depending on the block number. Even blocks up, odd blocks down. This way, each block will also nest with the next one.  The blocks will be 10.5" unfinished.

If you dislike sewing little squares together like that, I'm afraid you are at the wrong sew along! Ha :) There are other methods of sewing them together, here are a couple of them. Let me know if you know of others!

So, here we go! Blocks 1, 2, and 3 are all exactly the same, so make 3 just like this.

Square requirements for 1 block:
Color B- 2
Color C- 8
Color D- 2
Color E- 2
Color F- 8
Background- 42
Classic

Pansy

Buttercup

To be honest, I haven't been counting squares out as I sew. I'm very much a visual person, so I just look at the diagram and grab the squares that I need as a go along. Hopefully the system here will work for all types, let me know if anything doesn't make sense!

Here is the order in which we will be doing the blocks. So as to not get bored doing two weeks in a row of the same things, I'm going in two colums of 3 at a time. If you want to be ahead later and have blocks 22, 23, and 24 already done, make 3 more blocks just like the ones from today!

The blocks should be pressed and ready to join with interlocking seams. I'm going to join them as a go along since a big stack of blocks at the end can be intimidating. Here's what mine is looking like so far!

See you next week for the tippity top of the tulips!

Remember, you can always easily find all the Folk Stitches patterns at the the button on the top right of the blog :)
