Easy Strip Quilt Pattern- Baby Basket

I had planned to have this pattern ready as the very first post on my new blog. Better late than never I say!

This quilt pattern was inspired by a vintage family quilt that my great-grandmother made for my mom when she was a teenager. It features the classic rail fence block and we still use it for backyard picnics at my mom's house to this day! The design is very nostalgic for me, so I wanted to make one in "my colors". Hers was mustard yellow and pine green, which also happen to be my high school colors. Not my personal favorites, but each to his/her own!

I'm always looking for fun, easy ways to use precuts, and this is definitely one. You can whip up the quilt top in an evening. That's my kind of baby quilt.

I used a Riley Blake Rolie Polie of "Bloom and Bliss", with backing and binding also from that line. This line isn't as easy to find these days but Nadra's new one "Backyard Roses" is even better in my opinion! The border is Riley Blake's medium gingham in yellow. The white is Kona Snow.

I can't wait to show you the versions my pattern testers are making, they are adorable. Go ahead and make one for a new baby gift, and don't forget to tag #babybasketquilt on Instagram so I can see!

UPDATE: I made a boy version of this quilt for a friend who is having her first baby. Instead of using precuts, I used navy, green, and aqua yardage from my stash and I love how it turned out!

  1. Such a cute and simple pattern, thank you for sharing it! I have been searching for easy baby quilt patterns since several good friends are expecting their first baby but I don't have a lot of sewing time (with a 6 month old and soon going back to work),
    so this is perfect! :)

  4. Question about the 18 strips used from the jelly roll - were they 18 different prints, or did you use some duplicates? Thx!

    1. Hello! I did not use duplicates in either of mine :)

  5. This quilt is adorable and I love the pattern. I've already stalked it on Instagram! ;) Do you happen to have a pattern for a bigger size? I would love this for my couch! I'm assuming I could use an entire Jelly roll and then just randomly place the squares. Just thought I would ask. So glad I found you!

  6. Where is the pattern for this? I couldn't find it where you sell patterns. I want to know how many of each fabric I need. Thank you.

  7. you mention that you also made one without the use of precuts - I'd like to do that but not sure about the amount of material needed if I do that - thanks

  8. Depending on the room or placement of the fixture, the hanging length or height of a fixture is equally as important as the size. The clearance needed depends on the space the light is being used in. best hanging lantern

  9. i love this quilt pattern. I am a beginner quilter, and i have a question about the directions. the initial strips sets are 7 inches wide (each strip is 2.5" wide, times 3, minus two 1/2" seam allowance) - so why cut them into "6.5" squares". shouldn't they be cut into 7" squares?
    thanks for the advice!, CG

    1. Hi there! After being sewn into strips, the middle portion (white) will now be 2" finished, and the two strips on either side will be 2.25", with one seam sewn and one not, so I'm getting 6.5"? I've made this one a few times, and it works out, I promise! All seams are 1/4". If you give it a try it might make more sense.

    2. Thank you, I had the same question! It makes sense now, you have to account for seam allowances.

  10. Thank you so much for making this pattern accessible and free! It's adorable and I'm making my very first quilt using your pattern! Can you please elaborate on this: "center the 2 corner units by leaving a quarter inch on each side of the center block of the next row"? I can't seem to figure out what you mean here. Thank you so much for your help and generosity, I appreciate that you answer all of your comments, too!
